VAT, GST, and sales tax

Aksara uses Stripe for payment setup and Checkout. Your connected business remains the seller for your customer transaction.

The 30-second answer

The connected creator is the seller. Stripe payment setup does not register your business for product taxes. You remain responsible for the registrations, product tax treatment, filing and records that apply to you.

What Stripe handles

Stripe verifies the information needed to activate your payment account, processes payment, and sends payouts to your bank account.

When an active tax registration is configured, Stripe Tax can calculate and show applicable sales tax, VAT, or GST in Checkout.

What you still need to do

You are responsible for determining whether you must register for tax, registering when required, choosing the correct tax treatment for your products, filing returns, remitting tax, and keeping records.

Stripe account approval and VAT or GST registration are different steps. An approved Stripe account does not automatically mean you are registered to collect tax.

When tax is collected

Aksara enables automatic tax only for a seller whose connected account has active tax settings, a preset product tax code and at least one active registration verified through Stripe. Until then, Checkout does not add tax automatically.

Rules and thresholds depend on your business, location, products, and buyers. Speak with a qualified local tax adviser if you are unsure what applies to you.
